Red vs. Blue LED Light — What Is the Difference and Which Does Your Skin Need?

Why light color matters

What happens in the skin
When red light reaches the cells of the dermis, it is absorbed by the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria. This enzyme is part of the cell’s respiratory chain — and when it is activated by light, the mitochondria begin producing more ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — cellular energy.
More energy means more active fibroblasts. More active fibroblasts mean more collagen. More collagen means firmer, younger-looking skin.

Blue LED light with a wavelength of 460 nanometers works completely differently from red light. It does not penetrate deeply — it acts in the epidermis and upper part of the dermis (up to 1 mm). But in that zone, it does something no other color can do.
What happens in the skin
The Cutibacterium acnes bacteria (the cause of inflammatory acne) naturally produce substances called porphyrins. When blue light hits these porphyrins, a photochemical reaction is triggered that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). These oxygen radicals destroy the bacterium from within — without antibiotics, without chemicals, without resistance.
It is an elegant mechanism: blue light does not attack the skin. It attacks the bacteria — and exactly where they live and cause problems.
Specific effects of blue light
Elimination of C. acnes bacteria — the primary antibacterial effect. It reduces the number of bacteria on the skin and in the pores, lowering the formation of new inflammatory lesions.
Reduction of active acne — inflammatory pimples (papules, pustules) become smaller and new ones appear less often. Most people notice improvement after 2–4 weeks.
Regulation of sebaceous glands — some studies suggest that blue light partially suppresses excess sebum production, which helps with oily skin.
No antibiotic resistance — unlike oral and topical antibiotics, bacteria cannot develop resistance to blue light. The mechanism of action (photochemical destruction) simply does not allow adaptation.

Frequency and duration
The same rule applies to both colors: 3–5 times per week, 10 minutes per session. Consistency matters more than duration. Better 10 minutes every other day than 30 minutes once a week.
Time of day
Red light is most effective in the evening — the skin naturally regenerates during sleep, and red light strengthens that process. After LED therapy, it is the ideal time to apply a serum with peptides or retinol.
