How to Choose an LED Face Mask: 7 Specs That Decide

At a glance, LED face masks all look the same. A white or silver shell, glowing light, a promise of better-looking skin. Prices run from around fifty pounds to several hundred — and the product description rarely explains why.
The difference is not the shape or the packaging. It is seven specifications that determine whether the light reaches your skin at all, and in what dose. This guide walks through each one, and how to verify it before you order.
Why two masks at the same price can perform differently
Light therapy rests on a simple principle: skin cells respond to light at specific wavelengths, provided they receive enough of it, often enough. Enough is the operative word. A mask that looks equally bright but delivers half the energy per square centimetre needs twice the session time to match it — or never gets there at all.
You cannot tell from a photo. You can tell from the specs, if you know what to look for.
1. Wavelengths — what each colour actually does
Light colour is not a styling choice. Each wavelength penetrates to a different depth and engages different processes in the skin.

What to check: whether the seller states a specific figure in nanometres, not just "red light". The gap between 630 nm and 660 nm is small; the gap between 630 nm and an unspecified red LED from a lamp can be decisive. We compared the colours in detail in Red vs. blue light.
2. LED count and layout
The number of LEDs determines how much of the face is covered at once, and how evenly. Budget masks typically carry 50 to 100 LEDs clustered in the centre — the edges of the face, the jawline and the hairline then receive noticeably less light.
As a rough guide: under 100 LEDs, a mask is a supplement rather than a full treatment. Above 200 LEDs spread across the whole surface, you are looking at coverage that treats the entire face in one cycle. Watch for one marketing trick: some sellers count LEDs that only light up in a single mode. If "210 LEDs" describes the blue mode while red runs forty of them, the number is true but misleading. Ask how many LEDs are active in each mode.
3. Irradiance in mW/cm² — the number almost nobody publishes
This is the specification that matters most and appears least. It states how much energy reaches each square centimetre of skin per second. Without it, the LED count is just a number — a hundred weak diodes deliver less than thirty strong ones.
Home masks generally sit somewhere between 5 and 25 mW/cm². If a seller does not publish the figure and will not supply it when asked directly, that is an answer in itself. 4. Material and fit — rigid shell or silicone
A hard plastic shell is cheaper to manufacture but only touches the raised parts of the face. An air gap forms between the mask and the skin, in a different place and of a different size on every person — and light intensity falls off quickly with distance.
Flexible silicone follows the contours of the face, holds the LEDs at a constant distance from the skin and can be worn lying down. If you are choosing between two masks with similar specs, material is usually the difference that decides whether you actually use it three times a week or leave it in a drawer.

5. Power — cable, battery and capacity
A mains-powered mask ties you to one spot for the whole session. A battery-powered mask works anywhere, but capacity matters: at 1200 mAh you get several sessions per charge, at half that you will be recharging after almost every use.
Check the connector too. USB-C means the same charger as your phone. A proprietary connector means trouble the day you lose the cable.
6. Certifications — what they mean and what they don't
This is where most of the misleading claims live. In short:
- CE — a declaration of conformity with European product safety requirements. For a cosmetic device this is the baseline every product sold in the EU should hold.
- RoHS — confirms restriction of hazardous substances in the electronics.
- FDA clearance — a US registration. It is not an approval or an endorsement, and it carries no legal weight in Europe.
- "Clinically tested" — without a reference to a specific study naming the sponsor, participant count and publication, it is only a line in the description.
A sensible approach: confirm the mask holds CE and RoHS, and ask for documentation on any other badge. A serious seller will send it.
7. Reviews, warranty and returns
Light therapy does not work on a single use. The recommended routine is 10 minutes, three to five times a week, with the first visible changes at around four weeks. Which leads to a simple conclusion: a return window shorter than a month does not let you genuinely test the product.
With reviews, look at the count rather than the average. A 5.0 from eight reviews says less than a 4.8 from a hundred. And look for reviews on an independent platform — Trustpilot, Google — not only those on the seller's own site. Five warning signs
- The description gives no wavelengths in nanometres and no irradiance in mW/cm².
- The seller promises a specific result in a specific timeframe ("wrinkles gone in 7 days").
- The product is described as a treatment for a named medical condition. An LED mask is a cosmetic device, not a medical device.
- There is no traceable seller — address, company number, contact, real customer support.
- The return window is 14 days or less, or is conditional on unopened packaging.
Who should not use one
Light therapy is not recommended for people with photosensitivity, those taking medication that increases light sensitivity, people with epilepsy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or with eye conditions. Is a more expensive mask automatically better?
No. Price reflects brand and marketing too. Compare the specifications — LED count, wavelengths and irradiance — not the price tag.
Is one light colour enough?
If you are focused on one specific thing, a single-colour mask can be enough. Multiple modes make sense when you want to alternate based on what your skin needs that week.
How long is one session?
At adequate irradiance, usually 10 minutes. If a mask requires 30 minutes or more, that often signals lower output.
How long until I see something?
With regular use three to five times a week, the first changes in skin appearance typically appear at around four weeks. It is not a one-off effect.
Can I use it alongside my usual skincare?
