How to prepare the skin before the LED mask - complete instructions for maximum results

Príprava pleti pred použitím LED masky na tvár LumenLuxe

An LED face mask is one of the most effective at-home beauty devices — but only if you know how to use it properly. Preparing your skin before every session is not optional — it is the step that decides whether you see results after 2 weeks or only after 2 months.

This guide shows you exactly what to do before every session with your LED face mask, what to avoid and why it matters from a scientific point of view.

Why is preparing your skin before an LED mask important?

Red light penetrates the skin to a depth of 3–5 mm, where it stimulates fibroblasts — the cells responsible for collagen production. Blue light works on the surface and destroys acne-causing bacteria.

The problem arises when there is a layer of make-up, sunscreen or heavy moisturiser on the skin. These products act as a filter — they reflect part of the light before it penetrates the skin. The result is the same as shining a torch through thick fabric — the light scatters and loses its strength.

Clean skin with no barriers = light penetrates fully = better results.

Step 1 — Thorough cleansing

Cleansing is the most important preparation step. Remove everything — make-up, sunscreen, serum, cream. Your skin must be absolutely clean.

What to use for cleansing before your LED face mask:

Micellar water — ideal for gently removing make-up. It does not dry out the skin and does not disrupt its natural pH.

A gentle cleansing gel or foam — removes impurities and excess sebum. Choose one without aggressive surfactants (SLS, SLES).

Double cleansing — for women who wear make-up with SPF. First a cleansing oil, then a water-based cleansing gel.

What to avoid when cleansing — alcohol-based toners and harsh exfoliating cleansing gels right before a session. They dry out the skin and reduce the cells' ability to absorb light.

Tip: Also cleanse your neck and décolletage if you plan to use the LED mask on these areas too.

Step 2 — Exfoliation — yes, but not right before a session

Exfoliation removes the layer of dead skin cells that blocks light penetration. Regular exfoliation increases the effectiveness of LED therapy — but there is one rule.

Never exfoliate immediately before an LED session. Freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive and intense light can cause irritation.

The right approach:

Exfoliate 24–48 hours before your planned LED session.

Enzyme peel — a gentle option, suitable even for sensitive skin. Use 1–2× a week.

Chemical peel with AHA or BHA acids — more effective, suitable for skin used to acids. Use 1× a week.

Physical exfoliation (scrub) — the least recommended option for regular exfoliation before LED therapy. It can irritate the capillary network.

Step 3 — Serum before an LED mask — what works and what doesn't

This is the step where most women make a mistake. Some serums multiply the effectiveness of an LED mask, others block it.

Serums that increase the effectiveness of LED therapy:

Hyaluronic acid — hydrates the skin and creates an optimal environment for cellular regeneration. Apply it to slightly damp skin for better absorption.

Peptides — directly support collagen production, which is the same mechanism as red light. Combining peptides with LED therapy gives a synergistic effect.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) — evens out skin tone, minimises pores and strengthens the skin barrier. It combines excellently with red light.

Vitamin C (stable forms) — an antioxidant that protects newly formed collagen from oxidative stress.

Serums to apply only AFTER a session, not before:

Retinol and retinoid products — they increase the skin's photosensitivity. Use them in the evening after an LED session, not before it.

High concentrations of AHA and BHA acids — the same reason as retinol. After a session, not before.

Step 4 — Skin and room temperature

A lesser-known but important factor. Warm skin has better microcirculation and the cells absorb light energy better.

Ideal preparation: a short warm shower or washing your face with warm water 10 minutes before a session. Your skin will have slightly increased blood flow and be more receptive.

Avoid cold water right before a session — use cold water after the session to close the pores.

Step 5 — Final check before putting on the mask

Before every session, check:

Your skin is clean and dry — no product residue.

Your serum has absorbed — wait 1–2 minutes after applying it.

Protective eye shields are on — LED light is safe but intense. Eye protection is included in the LumenLuxe mask package.

The straps are adjusted correctly — the mask must fit snugly against your face. A gap between the mask and the skin reduces effectiveness.

What to do after a session with your LED face mask

Preparation before a session is important — but care afterwards is just as important.

Immediately after a session, your skin is optimally primed to absorb active ingredients. Make use of it:

Apply a hydrating serum or cream — your skin absorbs it more effectively than at any other time.

Now is the time for retinol or AHA acids if you use them.

Avoid direct sunlight for 30 minutes after a session — your skin is slightly more sensitive.

How often to use an LED face mask

The optimal frequency for visible results is 3–5× a week, 10 minutes per session. You can use the mask daily without risk — LED light has no cumulative negative effects when used correctly.

The first results — improved hydration and skin radiance — are visible after 2 weeks. More pronounced changes in wrinkles and acne appear after 4–8 weeks of regular use.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the LED mask in the morning and in the evening? Yes, LED therapy is safe at any time of day. Most women prefer an evening session as part of a relaxing routine.

Do I have to wash my face before every session even if I'm not wearing make-up? Yes. During the day, sebum, dust and pollution build up on the skin and block the light. Cleansing before every session is essential.

Can I use the LED mask if I have sensitive skin? Yes, LED therapy is gentle even on sensitive skin. Start with shorter sessions — 5 minutes — and gradually extend them to 10 minutes.

What if I don't have a serum — can I use just a moisturiser? A light moisturiser is fine. Just avoid heavy, oily textures that create a barrier on the surface of the skin.

Is an LED face mask safe during pregnancy? As a precaution, we do not recommend using it during pregnancy — not because of any proven risk, but because of the lack of clinical studies on pregnant women.
